Singapore prides itself in being one of the most bilingual countries in the world, with a large majority of the population being able to communicate in the English Language as well as a native tongue. As the years go by, it has also become clear that globalisation and the surge of English new media have taken its toll on the Mother Tongue languages. Children are being raised speaking mostly English at home, and as for many parents, the difficulty to keep up with the formal tone of Mother Tongue languages intensifies. Yet for the Singaporean student, the need for one to perform in the Mother Tongue language prevails. So, how do you help your child master his Mother Tongue language? Here are three simple steps that you could start with.

As the years go by, it has also become clear that globalisation and the surge of English new media have taken its toll on the mother tongue languages

  1. Become your child’s conversation partner

How often do you use the Mother Tongue language to speak to your child? If you could, you should set a goal to have a certain number of conversations daily with your child in your native tongue. The basic idea of using language is to communicate, and what better way than to have conversations. Conversing with your child would allow you to teach him certain structures of speech, be it formal or informal. As the bond between you and your child is the tightest, it also removes the common issues of anxiety, unfamiliarity and self-esteem that your child might face when in the classroom with teachers or other classmates, who might be more fluent in the language than your child. To your child, your validation is king; therefore, it also gives you the opportunity to peg your child’s progress according to his ability level and give praise where it is due. The consistent attention that you give your child would work wonders to his motivation!

  1. Tap on your child’s interest

If you have looked through your child’s Mother Tongue textbooks, you might have noticed that the scenarios given in passages and stories may not always appeal to your little one’s interest. As you see your child daily, seize the opportunity to seek out his interests – be it cartoons, robots, sports, computer games or even dolls. Have conversations with your child in your native tongue, based on what he is interested in, and he would be more willing and engaged in the conversation. The engagement would in turn sustain the use of the mother tongue, hence ensuring that practice takes place.  Since it is a topic that your child is interested in, it would also mean that you could revisit it as often as you like, and once his interest in the topic fades, be quick to tap on his new interest!

  1. Listen and watch native speakers

It is universally understood that children must learn to listen before they can speak. Every language sounds strange the first time your child hears it, but the more you expose him to it the more familiar the language becomes, and the easier it is to use the language for communication. For this, the best form of exposure for your child would be to allow him to consistently watch and listen to native speakers communicating proficiently in the language.  It is common that your child might be learning a mother tongue that is different from yours, or one that you are not as proficient in. That is not a cause for worry, as in Singapore, you would have learning centres with a large number of teachers who are native speakers, such as the Xue Hui Le Language Centre (学汇乐语文中心) at Grandtral Mall (Clementi MRT), opening this Saturday, on the 10 March 2018.
