Help Your Child Achieve Success Through Modelling

23 Jan 2018

All children need instruction, but some children need substantial amounts of truly high-quality teaching to learn to read and write alongside their peers. What all children need, and some need more of, are models. Modelling refers to an instructional strategy in which the teacher demonstrates a new concept or approach to learning and students learn by observing.

For decades, scientists, such as Vladimr Raikov, have done intensive research on strategies for students’ learning, based on modelling. In the 1970s, Raikov conducted experiments on students from different schools, studying the Arts such as music and painting. Although the experiments were complexed and highly advanced, the premise and conclusion were simple and straightforward – learning a skill is accelerated when following a model, whether it is from a genius, a teacher, or simply anyone you deem better than yourself.

Learning a skill is accelerated when following a model, whether it is from a genius, a teacher, or simply anyone better than yourself.

Modelling is thus an essential teaching tool for students of all ages – from the moment they start learning to read and write, all the way till their adult years in institutes of higher learning.

In school, teachers model the reading and writing processes by explicitly engaging with the materials while children observe. Reading aloud to children, for instance, provides a model of how words should sound and how it would make stories interesting. Composing a list of things needed for a project provides a model on organisational skills for writing. Talking about how a tragic story made us sad, or how a devastating piece of news made us worry, provides a model of response to text.

Reading aloud to children is one way to model fluent reading and thoughtful talk about books, stories, and responses.

Reading aloud to children is one way to model fluent reading and thoughtful talk about books, stories, and responses. Unfortunately, research has shown that teachers in school have less time (than before) to read texts aloud to children in classes because of other demands. Educational experts from all over the world are aware of this concern and they have offered guidelines for parents to conduct reading aloud activities out of school, including the following simple guidelines:

• Designate a time each day for reading aloud
• Select books and stories of quality (with appropriate themes) to read
• Discuss the books read with children
• Create groups with your friends’ children of similar ages who could share responses to books read
• Re-read selected pieces

The Mind Stretcher Best A* Model Composition (P5 & P6), as well as the A*作文深度解析 (P5 & P6) guide book, serve excellently for modelling good writing, reading, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension for Primary School children. The compositions featured in both books were originally written by students who participated in the MS National English Writing Competition 2017 and 学汇乐 National Chinese Writing Competition 2017. These were further improved on by the subject specialists, yet ensuring the essence of the stories were kept. Both books were pedagogically designed, written, with several rounds of editing and enhancement on annotations and learning features, by our in-house curriculum specialists, to ensure high quality pieces of model compositions for our readers.

The clear and detailed guiding tips and in-depth explanations given in each book provide parents with an ease of conveying the stories in these model compositions, along with the analysis of questions and easy-to-read learning points. Parents can also take their modelling session a step further by having quality discussions with their children on how the stories could have been written differently, and asking inferential questions about the story line or highlighting explicitly the different writing techniques being deployed.

As much as the genius of creativity is hyped and admired these days, one needs to accelerate one’s capabilities to be on par with the leading pack first, and what better way than by following the tried and tested footsteps of success.
