O-Level Crash Course Series

 

The O-Level examination is one of the biggest milestone for any secondary school student. Your performance in this examination will affect your choice of courses that you will be taking at the tertiary level, either Junior College or Polytechnic. Hence, it is important to start your preparation early so that you will be able to tackle it with confidence. In this O-Level series, Mind Stretcher will be equipping you with the important techniques in English, Maths and Science (Pure Chemistry) over 2 FULL days (12-hour) per subject at MS Central Campus @ HDB Hub.

The O-Level Crash Course Series will be conducted by our Secondary Subject Heads and experienced curriculum specialists. 

 

Here are the details of what you will be learning for each subject:

English:

Day 1 – (10 Jun, Mon) 9 am – 4 pm: English Paper 1

On the 1st day of the 2-day session, you will be equipped to ace Paper 1 by writing good situational-based essays and learning how to apply “PEEL”, a method for structuring essays. You will also pick up new skills to write good introductions and conclusions to impress your examiners! 

  • How to ace O-Level Essays and Situational Writing
  • Learn how to apply “PEEL” correctly when writing for paper 1
  • Identify the 6 common types of structures for powerful essay writing
  • Grasp strategies to write great introductions and conclusions to structure an engaging composition
  • Learn and practice advanced writing techniques for polishing your essay writing to impress your readers

 

Day 2 – (11 Jun, Tue) 9 am – 4 pm : English Paper 2

Brush up on Paper 2 components such as Summary and Comprehension! You will pick up key pointers to write effective summaries and how to answer various types of comprehension questions such as inferential, figurative and “impact” questions.

This course will cover the various types of Comprehension questions tested at the O-Level: Visual Comprehension, Narrative Comprehension and Non-Narrative Comprehension

  • Identify what to leave out in summary writing and why 
  • Rephrasing & word replacement techniques
  • Be equipped with writing techniques to tackle O-Level comprehension questions effectively 
  • Acquire skills to secure at least 8 marks for summary writing 

 

Maths:

Day 1 – (12 Jun, Wed) 9 am – 4 pm: Mathematics Paper 1

Did you know that 1 mark in the O-Level Maths Paper 1 is worth more than 1 mark in Paper 2? Hence, it is important to get your hands on every mark you can possibly secure in Paper 1 to ensure you can score that A1 for Maths. On the first day of our Maths session, you will be equipped with the skills to tackle  various Paper 1 Maths questions easily. 

  • Be equipped with the 3 Ts – Tips, Tricks and Techniques to avoid common pitfalls in Paper 1 
  • Explore difficult questions that differentiate between the A and A* student 
  • Acquire the overview of all topics from Sec 1 to Sec 4 
  • Exposure to new Question Trends

You are also encouraged to bring your marked papers from school for error analysis, so that our experienced teacher can give you feedback and help you to improve on your mistakes on the second day of this workshop.

 

Day 2 (13 Jun, Thu) 9 am – 4 pm: Mathematics Paper 2

Break the barriers to scoring well in Paper 2! You will learn time-management strategies so that you will not crack under the pressure of time during the O-Level Maths Paper. Our experienced teacher will also be identifying the new trend of questions of the latest O-Level Papers to ensure that you will be prepared for them when you see it in the O-Level. 

  • Focus on common pitfalls made by students from  presentation, accuracy and units 
  • Identify and break barriers to ace paper 2 
  • Acquire the overview of all topics from Sec 1 to Sec 4 
  • Master the art of time management to ensure that no questions are left untouched

 

Pure Chemistry:

Day 1 (19 Jun, Wed) 9 am – 4 pm: Chemistry Paper 2

Day 1 of the Chemistry workshop focuses on Paper 2, the most challenging component for most students. You will gain a better understanding of the command words used in the questions and know exactly what is required in your answers. To ensure that you focus on the more important topics, an analysis of past O-Level papers will be done. Our experienced curriculum specialist will revise with you the “must-know” frequently tested topics such as Chemical Bonding, Stoichiometry, Acids, Bases and Salts, Metals, Periodic Table, Electrolysis and Organic Chemistry. You will learn important answering techniques and practise some exam-type questions so that you will not be fazed when you encounter them during the O-Level.

  • Understand and learn how to use the command words to answer the questions 
  • Get an insight into past year papers to identify the important questions to focus on 
  • Revise must-know, frequently tested topics and practise exam-type questions

 

Day 2 – (20 Jun, Thu) 9 am – 4 pm: Chemistry Paper 1 & 3

Day 2 of the Chemistry workshop focuses on both Papers 1 and 3. To score well for Chemistry, Papers 1 and 3 cannot be neglected as they make up 50% of your Chemistry grade. Our experienced curriculum specialist will teach you how to use multiple choice questions to identify your weaker topics and misconceptions. This will ensure that you will not lose unnecessary marks in questions that requires knowledge of these topics. During this session, you will also do a mock Paper 1 under exam-simulated conditions and get a thorough analysis of your mistakes. For Paper 3, you will be equipped with the essential tips and techniques to carry out accurate titration and qualitative analysis. You will also learn to predict observations in qualitative analysis and record them in the correct manner.

  • Learn how to use multiple choice questions to identify your weaker topics and misconceptions
  • Practise Paper 1 under exam-simulated conditions followed by a thorough error analysis
  • Learn the tips and techniques in carrying out accurate titration and qualitative analysis
  • Learn to predict observations in qualitative analysis and record them in the correct manner
