Common Challenges Faced by Students in Class (and how to overcome them)

Life as a student is definitely not a walk in the park! Struggles with completing homework, studying and revising are commonly addressed, but sitting in class and making the most of it comes with its own struggles. However, students can overcome these challenges by following some simple strategies. In this blog post, we will discuss the most common challenges faced by students in class and ways to overcome them.

Distractions

Distractions are one of the most significant challenges that students face in class. Students can easily get distracted by their phones, classmates, or other external factors. This can result in a lack of focus, leading to poor academic performance. To overcome this challenge, students should identify the things that distract them and eliminate them from their environment. For instance, students can turn off their phones and sit away from talkative classmates. It might not be possible to prevent your mind from wandering altogether, but choosing to sit at the front of the class (if possible) and only keeping what’s necessary on your desk can help you focus better on learning!

Lack of Motivation & Direction

Another common challenge that students face in class is a lack of motivation. This can be caused by various factors such as boredom, a lack of interest in the subject, or personal issues. To overcome this challenge, students should find ways to make their classes more interesting and engaging. For instance, students can participate in class discussions, ask questions, and look for real-life examples that relate to the subject. On top of this, setting goals will ensure that you come to class with something to work towards. Having an agenda for each lesson is not just useful for teachers! As a student, you can prepare ahead and come up with an agenda before class. Your agenda can include doubts you hope to clear and concepts you wish to gain a deeper understanding of. This gives you clear objectives to work towards during each lesson!

Difficulty keeping up with the lesson

The pace of a lesson can vary greatly depending on the teacher, the subject being covered and the student majority. For some, this pace might not be ideal. Some students might feel as though they are unable to keep up with lessons as teachers move from one concept to another before they are done processing what they have just learnt. One way to overcome this is by preparing ahead! Reading ahead and getting familiar with the content for the day can make it easier to keep up in class. Some students only open their textbooks for the first time when the teacher is about to start teaching and this can cause them to lag behind as they warm up to the subject. Another way to prevent falling behind in class is to utilise an effective note taking method. Attempting to write down everything that’s being said will cause students to not only fall behind, but also prevents them from listening actively. Look up note taking methods and find one that works best for you!

In conclusion, there are quite a few challenges that students face while being in class and by addressing these and tackling them, they can enjoy the learning experience, have fruitful time in school and reach their academic goals as a result.
