How to Give Your Child a Head Start for the New Academic Year

Football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Preparedness is the ultimate confidence builder”. Here are some ways to stay ahead of the curve and start preparing for 2023!

Make resolutions and set goals

How did your 2022 go? Give yourself a moment to pause and look back on the past 12 months. Was your school year smooth sailing? Did you struggle academically? You need not dwell on it and be a prisoner of your past, but a quick reflection can help you get started on planning for the new year! Let the battles you faced in 2022 be a basis for your new year resolutions. Perhaps you struggled during your English examinations and wished you had a richer vocabulary. Make a resolution to expand your vocabulary in 2023! Since resolutions are based on a change you want to make, they can sometimes be unclear. To tackle this, set a specific goal instead. In this case your goal could be to read 3 books a month. This way, you know exactly what to do to stick to your resolution and end up with a wider vocabulary by the end of 2023!

Set up routines

As important as goal setting is, aspiring towards an outcome or merely setting an intention does not mean you will see the results you desire. Goal setting can give you the motivation to kick off new habits, but the best way to ensure consistent action would be to rely on routines! To thrive throughout the school year and make sure you are taking small steps everyday to reach your goals, you might want to set up different routines for different times. Since your school timetable will give you structure while you are there, you should set up routines for the time you spend outside of school. Morning routines will help you face the day with clarity and after-school routines will help you finish your homework, revise and leave time for your hobbies. Routines are useful for the weekend too! Weekends can slip away from us in the blink of an eye, so having a routine will help ensure that you get enough rest and use the time wisely.

Get back in the academic groove

While the holidays give us an opportunity to rest, spend time with our loved ones and indulge in our favourite past times, all this time spent away from the structure of a school environment can put us in a state of inertia. Waiting until the first day of school and expecting your brain to launch into “student mode” can be quite a brutal demand! With a few weeks left till the start of the school term, now is a great time to slowly begin shifting your mindset to prevent feeling overwhelmed when the academic year begins. Paying a visit to the library and reading books or watching documentaries can help you get back into a proper headspace. You might even want to start reading parts of your textbooks that you find interesting or look up topics in your syllabus on YouTube!
